The holidays are fast approaching. With it comes students frantically scrambling to study for final exams and thinking about their winter holiday plans with their families. The season also naturally comes along with plenty of holiday-inspired performances from local theaters.
This holiday season, carve out some time from studying for those exams, and make your way to the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium to see a live performance of A Christmas Carol. What better way to start the countdown for the holiday season than with one of the classics? This play is both written and directed by Scott H. Severance, who has actually played Ebenezer Scrooge on tours for well over 10 years now. The new adaptation features a talented cast with plenty of special effects, elaborately designed stages, and more.
What to Expect from A Christmas Carol
For those not in the know, A Christmas Carol is a famous novel by Charles Dickens that has been adapted into various other forms of media. It’s one of those things in English-speaking cultures where even if you’ve never read or seen the source material, you’re probably already pretty well-versed in what happens. It’s been spoofed and riffed on in popular culture too many times to count. If a show’s running a holiday special, there’s a good chance that it aligns with the plot of A Christmas Carol. So, what’s the actual story?
The plot follows Ebenezer Scrooge of “Bah! Humbug!” fame as Christmas pulls around. He’s a miser—he loves his money, and that’s about it. After a sour scene in which one of his employees has to practically beg and plead with Scrooge to get Christmas Day off to spend with his sick son, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his former business partner. After giving Scrooge a warning to change his way, Scrooge receives a visit from three ghosts of past, present, and future—all with their own lesson to teach the curmudgeonly old man.
When to See the Show
The performance comes to Athens for one night only, as the cast is on a national tour. A Christmas Carol rolls into town on December 10th at 7pm. The show happens at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium on campus, and current OU students get a discount on tickets.
Take a break from studying for finals like crazy with one of the most loved holiday stories of our time. You won’t want to miss it.
