Athens is fortunate to have its own independent art film venue. The Athena has been showing 35 mm films since 1915 when it was known as the Majestic, and regularly offers the kind of independent fare that university students tend to appreciate.
Starting in June, the Athena began showing its Beat the Heat $2 Days Family Film Series, which continues through August 17 with the Triplets of Belleville at 3 p.m. as part of the Athens Community Music and Arts Festival.
The$2 minimum price of admission to this series goes toward a fundraiser for Southeast Ohio Youth Mentoring. Ticket holders will be entered into a raffle with a prize handed out at every event: prizes include admissions to the Athens City Pool, and admission passes to COSI in Columbus! Athens Public Libraries will hand out free books at the screenings.
Tickets are available a week before each screening. Each screening is a one-time only event, with limited numbers of tickets.
Otherwise check out the Athena regularly for its slate of art house films. It’s within walking distance of Athens Ohio student rentals at its convenient uptown location on Court Street.
