On Friday, October 6, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Athens Co. Fairgrounds will host the 8th annual Athens Area Stand Down. This community-led event is more than just a gathering; it’s an embodiment of compassion, support, and dedication to alleviating the struggles faced by the homeless population.
What is a Stand Down?
Originally a military term, “stand down” referred to giving exhausted combat units respite from the battlefield, offering them a safe space to rest, recuperate, and recharge. In civilian contexts, a Stand Down event is a community-driven initiative designed to help those battling the harsh realities of life on the streets. These events provide the homeless and those at risk of homelessness with access to essential services and resources. While the initial focus was on veterans, many Stand Downs now welcome all who are in need.
What to Expect at the Athens Area Stand Down?
Those attending the Athens Area Stand Down will receive:
- Essential items like food, clothing, blankets, hygiene products, and more.
- Access to medical, legal, and mental health assistance.
- Job counseling and referral services.
- A platform to connect, share stories, and receive the gift of camaraderie.
Though the event welcomes everyone, some services will remain exclusive to veterans.
Why does Athens need this event?
Since 2016, the Athens area has recognized the pressing need to address homelessness within the community. Despite Stand Down events being held in neighboring Ross County, many Athens residents were traveling there to access these vital resources. It became evident that Athens needed its own Stand Down event to bring these crucial opportunities closer to home. The magnitude of the homelessness issue in Athens is challenging to quantify, but community organizations affirm that the need for support is growing.
How Can You Help?
The success of the Athens Area Stand Down hinges on community involvement. While a list of items requested for donation is provided, the organizers are also open to feedback on other essentials that could benefit attendees. Services from various sectors—physical and mental health, dental, legal, housing, job coaching, and more—are also integral to the event’s impact. Due to ongoing COVID-19 precautions, all items should be new, and certain services may be limited.
Some of the items needed for 2023:
- Winter jackets (various sizes)
- 3-in-one body washes
- Hand warmers, blankets, towels
- Men’s winter socks
- Flashlights with batteries
- Gloves, first aid kits
- Laundry detergent
- Full-size toothpaste
