No sooner do OU classes start meeting for fall than it’s time for a holiday – Labor Day, to be exact, celebrated this year on Monday, Sept. 2, on which day university offices will be closed and classes will not be in session.
Residence halls will remain open, but you’ll need to check for culinary service hours, as well as hours of operation for the library.
Otherwise, you’ll be on your own. So how will you spend Labor Day in your Athens Ohio two-bedroom apartment, or other type of housing?
What to Do on Labor Day
First, maybe it’s worthwhile to pause for a moment and consider what this annual federal holiday that traditionally symbolizes the end of summer is all about. The American labor movement may have faded in modern consciousness, but it was responsible for many of the rights that today’s workers enjoy, including regulated hours, reasonable pay and safe working conditions.
Traditional celebrations include parties, parades and athletic events. While you may want to use the day to get ahead with your studies, do consider giving a nod to the departing summer by hosting an outdoor cookout (don’t forget the red, white and blue decorations); shopping for locally made goods (or any goods made in the USA by working Americans); or just visiting one of Athens’ many outdoor venues to enjoy your last day off till fall break.
