If you’re a fan of time-honored, folk-rock music, or even just a fan of a good old fashioned classical reimagining of songs, this show could be for you. The Indigo Girls are performing with the OHIO Symphony Orchestra on March 21st at 7:30pm at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium on campus, and it’s sure to be a well-attended event.
The Legendary History of The Indigo Girls
The Indigo Girls are a legendary folk-rock duo comprised of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers who have been active as a group since 1985 and have been friends for much longer. Releasing a whopping total of 15 studio albums in their music career, the duo has topped charts and toured countless times. As the Indigo Girls, the two have paved the way for future generations of music and songwriting with their activism-inspired lyrics, having collaborated on music with modern day artists like Pink.
In short, the Indigo Girls are kind of a big deal in the world of music and have created their own path and niche within that world, being revered and respected by many current-day acts who have taken inspiration from them in one way or another. To keep the momentum going 38+ years into their career—still performing together, not having “broken up,” and still consistently putting out new music—is nothing short of amazing and is testament to their friendship and passion for music.
A New Kind of Performance for The Indigo Girls
Amy Ray and Emily Salier also haven’t let their age slow them down one bit and have continued their tours and have put out countless albums in recent years. They began their symphony orchestra crossover tour in 2017, only stopping briefly for the pandemic and have also released a live album of the recordings for anyone who is curious as to what the sound is like before attending a show.
For these live performances, the Indigo Girls’ songs have been reworked for symphony orchestra music and come to life like never before with percussive beats, the gentle melody of wind instruments and strings, the sounds of horns—and of course, the strum of Amy Ray and Emily Salier’s guitars. The resulting sound is monumental and harmonious while still retaining the charm and integrity of the Indigo Girls’ original sounds as the instruments blend together to create something truly special.
Tickets for the show are currently on sale for the March show and can be purchased for $35. The performance is sure to be a hit and draw a crowd from Ohio University, the city of Athens, and folks and fans of the Indigo Girls from all around Ohio.
