It’s summertime, and Athens can be quite the ghost town. But there’s still plenty going on if you know where to look. Summertime in Athens is a well-kept local secret. Many alumni plan trips to Athens during the summertime to avoid the student bustle and enjoy the city on their own terms. Here are a few great summertime activities conveniently located to Ohio University housing.
Boogie on the Bricks
Scheduled for Saturday, June 20, Boogie on the Bricks is making Athens a tourist destination. It’s a one day community arts and music festival that’s absolutely free. Dance in the streets to some great local bands. There are two stages and a beer garden featuring local beer. There’s also great food, merchandise and art vendors. It’s a week that plenty of alumni come into town, so it’s practically a family reunion.
Nelsonville Music Festival
The Nelsonville Music Festival has grown over the last several years to become one of the best summer music festivals in the region. Previous years have featured the Flaming Lips, Sean Lennon, Wilco and Merle Haggard. This year’s lineup features Gillian Welch, Charles Bradley, and Randy Newman. There’s camping available, but located in Nelsonville just a few miles away from Ohio University and your apartment, it’s easy to get to.
Ohio Brew Week
Held in July in Athens, Ohio Brew Week is a festival of craft beers from over 26 breweries located in Ohio. The week features beer competitions, workshops, and tastings. Local restaurants feature a variety of Ohio craft beer on tap. Other events include cook-outs, concerts, tastings and golf outings.
