History of the Ohio Black Expo
The Ohio Black Expo was founded in 1980 by Ohio State graduate and Cincinnati native Rhonda D. Robinson.
The initial vision of the Expo – then called the Columbus Black Expo – was to create a platform for black-owned businesses to showcase their products and services, network with other entrepreneurs, and reach new customers.
Over the years, the Expo has grown in size and scope, with a focus on empowering the African-American community through education, employment, and entrepreneurship.
The event was held at the Focal Point of Mt. Vernon Plaza from 1981 – 1987 and then moved around to several locations around the city and the state, all the while changing its name to the current Ohio Black Expo moniker. The name change signifies the broader vision that the event takes on today of connecting Black residents across the state in a multitude of ways.
In the mid to late nineties, the event went on a hiatus until 2020, when a small, virtual expo was held with about 500 hundred attendees. 2022 saw the return of in-person programming with the event being held in the city for the first time since 1991.
