Looking for something to do this winter where you can get dressed up and go see a live performance in a beautiful theater downtown? Moulin Rouge! The Musical is making its way to Columbus on its tour, and it’s something you won’t want to miss out on if you’re a fan of stage musicals, Parisian romance, lavish costumes, and talented singing.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be stopping off for two weeks in Columbus during its tour from January 1st to January 14th 2024 from where it’ll continue on its tour across the country.
What Makes the Live Musical Different from the Movie Adaptation?
While Moulin Rouge! was originally a musical film that was released back in 2001, the stage production musical has only been in existence since 2018 but has made a name for itself independent of its predecessor by winning 10 Tony awards during the year when it was up for nomination. The musical follows the same story set out by the film while being a “jukebox musical” of sorts, meaning the musical consists of popular, chart-topping songs from today’s age and isn’t a full collection of original music—which let’s be honest, musicals are always more fun when you know the songs going into them anyways. Obviously, one of the biggest differences between the musical and the film is that the musical retains the songs from the original movie, but they add tons more songs to the production. Get ready to jam out to some pop songs like “Bad Romance,” “Shake It Out,” “Material Girl,” “Roxanne,” and so many more as the cast sings and dances their way across the stage through a total of 70 songs throughout the duration of the production.
What’s the Plot of Moulin Rouge! The Musical Like?
Moulin Rouge! The Musical follows the same story introduced in the movie. It takes place in France during the very start of the 1900s and takes place in the titular Moulin Rouge cabaret in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. The story follows Christian, a poor composer from Ohio, who after forging a friendship with some local bohemians, begins work on a number for Moulin Rouge. It’s there that he meets the local dancers, including the “sparkling diamond” of the cabaret, Satine. And so, begins another story of two star-crossed lovers. The two begin a romantic relationship filled with twists, turns, and dramatic moments as the story progresses through its two acts.
