Now that you’re settling into your Athens Ohio rental housing, you’re likely well aware that you could have used a ___ (fill in the bank). We know you’ve realized you forgot something. Or more than one thing. Here are a few things most college students need that they may have overlooked when packing. So if you don’t have one, go get it soon, or ask Mom and Dad to send it in the next care package.
- Garbage/trash can. You probably have outdoor bins for trash and recycling, but you absolutely will need your own trash can for debris you generate in your bedroom – used tissue paper for when you’re crying over that Dear John/Jane letter from your high school sweetheart, aborted versions of your mid-term essay and the cupcake holders from the secret treats Mom sent in the mail and that you didn’t share with the roommates.
- Deck of cards. Card games are good ways to break the ice and make new friends – invite those cute girls (or guys) from next door over and show your poker prowess. Or, for lonelier nights, amuse yourself by flipping the cards in that shiny new trash can.
- Steamer iron. It’s OK most of the time to go around unpressed these days, but there will be occasions when you need to be wrinkle free – job interviews, first dates, interviews for financial awards or formal get-togethers with your major’s student association.
- Umbrella. It’s going to rain in Athens, if it hasn’t already. You may have been too cool in high school to own an umbrella, but things have changed. You don’t need to show up in class looking like a drowned rat.
- Organizational materials. You don’t need a big pile of these, but it’s good to have on hand some cellophane tape, push pins, paperclips, a stapler, pencils and a pencil sharpener. These items are a help when organizing important papers, bills and receipts, putting your assignments together, sending snail mail to friends and family (it will make them happy to get it), jotting down notes, filing, whatever.
- Water bottle. Ditch the throw-away plastic water bottles, and invest in a good quality steel bottle. Drink plenty of water – yes, from the tap. It helps to wash away too many sodas, sweets, and high-salt junk food, and keeps you hydrated so you sleep better.
