Neighborhood

Kurtz Street/Oak Street/Mill Street

The close-in student neighborhood just to the east and down the hill from uptown Athens is technically part of the Near East Side, though usually when you hear that term, it refers to the larger, mainly non-student neighborhood to the north of Stimson Avenue, bounded by East State Street, U.S. Rt. 33 and the Hocking River. The neighborhood just south of Stimson is as close to 100 percent student as you’ll fine in Athens. This so-called Palmer-Stewart-Mill neighborhood (or any combination of those street names) includes several mini-neighborhoods, including the area around Kurtz and Oak streets, which each run a block north of Mill Street. Living in this heavily student mini-hood, student tenants have easy, five-minute walking access to the OU campus and uptown Athens, as well as the small commercial district on Stimson Avenue, with several convenience and fast-food options. Many generations of OU students have relied on carry-outs on Stimson to fulfill their beer, wine and snack needs, and since 2019, the Busy Day Market on Stimson has filled a vacuum by also selling hard liquor. For students who like to jog, walk or bike for exercise, the Palmer-Stewart-Mill street neighborhood is very close to the riverside bike path.
