As the spring semester winds to a close, you’re frantically writing term papers, cramming for finals, and trying to fit in one last shuffle with your friends. When that last final is turned in and you’ve crawled out of that Fish Bowl crater of a hangover, you’re probably flying out of Athens like a bat out of hell. And burglars are hiding in the bushes, waiting for you to leave.
Don’t leave them much of a payday. Be smart. Here are a few tips on how to keep your Athens rental safe and secure while you are away all summer.
Double Check the Locks
The last man standing should always double check the locks. This includes not only the front door but all the windows, the back door, that door in the basement everyone practically forgets even exists. Don’t make it easy by leaving the front door unlocked and practically wide open.
Hide All Valuables
Stash anything of real value. This includes any computers, digital devices, stereos, etc. Don’t leave any cash or jewelry out in the open. It’s also a good idea to close all the curtains just in case somebody wants to do some quick scouting to see if a crowbar is worth their while.
Leave a Bathroom Light On
Turn on the bathroom light and leave it propped open. It just might be the trick to scare off a sneaking thief who might think somebody is home and using the John.
Hold All Your Mail
Have the Post Office put a hold on all your mail so it isn’t obvious nobody’s home. You’d be surprised how much mail you’d get over a summer, even if the important stuff is already rerouted to your parents. Junk mail can be a great advertisement to thieves that nobody’s home.
