If your parents are coming with you to help you move in your Athens Ohio housing this August, you may want to look into some things that are fun to do locally, once the hard part of the move is concluded. You can make the rounds of the campus and sample the college town ambience of Court Street and environs, but you may want to take the folks a little farther afield.
Here’s a list of some of the highlights:
- Kennedy Museum of Art – Owned by OU and housed in a former insane asylum, the museum features a changing art exhibition.
- Pleasant Hill Vineyards – A well-known retreat from the campus for parents visiting their offspring. Visitors can sample wines and appetizers, and nice views of the sunset
- Dairy Art Barn – Just what it says, it’s an art space and museum in a dairy barn. It is host to a quilt exhibit, gift shop with local goods, special events and a holiday craft fair.
- Athens Farmers Market – Fresh produce, grass-fed beef, locally made cheese and yogurt, locally grown vegetables and teas: the farmers’ market has it all.
- Athena Cinema – Treat your parental types to an evening at the art house cinema. It’s a rite of passage for a college student, and the Athena shows some fine films.
And don’t forget the local parks for hiking, walking, biking or just relaxing after a hard day or two of moving. They may also be interested in the Wistendahl Native Plant Garden, a place to discover Ohio’s unique native flora. August is prime time for monarch butterfly migration, so be on the alert, as Wistendahl is a Monarch Waystation.
