Spring Break in Athens
Too broke for Florida? May the entire state rot in a heat wave Hell. Athens has plenty going on. The only drawback to the Athens lifestyle is going to class, and fortunately, that problem is taken care of for the next week. So, stock the fridge with beer. Put a bullet in your alarm clock. Party like it’s Prince’s 99th birthday.
The Porch Party Network
Chances are you aren’t the only one staying in Athens for the week of Spring Break. While the town will get sparse during the week, there will still be plenty of you cheapskate, non-beach bums left in the woodwork. Unite! Plan porch parties at your friend’s apartments that have a yard or a great porch. Take over happy hours. Live life large. The town is empty, so its defenses are down.
Go Natural
No, we’re not talking about taking your clothes off, but if your roommates have sailed the minivan to Florida, whose stopping you? Athens does have plenty of nature, the green, earthy kind, right outside the walls of your Athens apartment. The Ridges are within walking distance right up the street. Stroud’s Run is about 10 minutes outside of town and within biking distance. Lake Hope allows backpacking. Burr Oak has some great boating.
Take a Road Trip
If you have a car in town and rent your own off campus parking space, nothing says spring break like a road trip. The Purple Fiddle in West Virginia is a great spot to catch some great music and enjoy a bed and breakfast without breaking the bank. The Wild Horse Café in Pomeroy offers great meals by the river.
Check Out the Music of the Fur Peace Ranch
The Fur Peace Ranch features great concerts of some of the best acoustic musicians on the road today. It’s within easy driving distance of Athens, just over the ridge in Meigs County. It’s definitely worth checking out.
Bond with your roommates
If you live with roommates, be it a small two-bedroom apartment or a large six-bedroom house, Spring Break together – even in Athens – is a good time to forge deeper connections with them.
Spend time spring cleaning the apartment or home, or maybe add some new decorations or fix the blinds that your roommate broke a few months back. Now is a great time to be productive on things outside of the classroom.
Or if you just want to chill, that’s fine, too. Grab your roommates and head out into your house’s yard for some cornhole or spike ball. Here are some other fun yard games:

Your rental doesn’t have a yard? No problem. Just veg out on the couch with your homies. Watch that TV show you’ve been meaning to catch up on, beat your loudmouth roommate in Madden. Cook up that recipe you saved a few months back. The possibilities are endless.
