Who doesn’t love strolling through a farmers market on a Saturday morning, sipping some coffee or tea from one of the stalls, and perusing fresh, locally-grown produce? Well, some people surely, but not in Athens. The Athens Farmers Market was ranked the number one best farmers market in Ohio, tenth in the Midwest, and thirty-fifth nationwide in 2022. There are a lot of farmers markets out there, so that’s saying something. But what makes this one of the best markets out there?
Fresh, Unique, Local Produce
It’s no surprise that a farmers market will have fresh produce, but since southeast Ohio is a great area to grow crops and farm, you’re sure to find bountiful provisions throughout the stalls that other major retailers just wouldn’t have. Not to mention with the local Amish population, there is an abundance of meats, cheeses, maple syrups, dips, breads, and other goods on display. Fresh produce is one way to elevate an ordinary meal into an extraordinary meal—the difference in taste and flavor can’t compare to anything store-bought.
With multiple dozens of vendors and farmers attending, there’s something here for everyone.
A Vibrant Arts Scene
Food and produce aren’t the only thing you’re able to find at the Athens Farmers Market. Partnering with the Athens Art Guild, the farmers market also features handcrafted creations like wooden furniture, jewelry, pottery, paintings, and other items made by members of Athens and the surrounding communities.
Who knew you could go to a farmers market and walk away with a brand new, hand-built, wooden table for your space? The love for its vibrant community of artisans and the amount of locally-made items to be found is one of the many things that sets this farmers market apart from others.
Hours and Dates
The Athens Farmers Market is so popular, that they’re generally open twice a week for business. On Wednesdays from mid-April to late November, the market is open from 9am-12pm in the Athens Community Center parking lot, where vendors line the rows with fresh produce and wares.
Like most things in Ohio, once it gets too cold, people tend to want to stay inside. Thankfully, the farmers market is also open on Saturdays from 9am-12pm at the same location, with vendors setting up fully inside during the colder months.
So, what are you waiting for? If you haven’t visited the Athens Farmers Market yet, give it a chance. You’ll be glad you did.
