Screw Tom Cruise. The best flicks are at the Athens International Film Festival.
Held in early April, the Athens International Film and Video Festival has been the best excuse to get out of your Athens studio apartment since 1974. Sponsored by the Athens Center for Film and Video, the festival screens films from throughout the world.
The Selection Process
Competition films are selected by a Prescreening Committee comprised of artists, students, and community activists. Prizes are awarded by guest jurors, in four categories: documentary, experimental, narrative, and animation. Competition films are then categorized around certain themes to add some continuity.
Other feature films that have been hits at various film festivals are also screened.
“We’re not about celebrity,” Ruth Bradley, a former director of the festival told Ohio Magazine. “We’re not about who’s the latest flavor of the year. We’re about the artists’ films here, and we have audiences who love to watch the movies.”
So get out of your Athens apartment for one of the great community events of the year. Festival passes are available to catch multiple movies at a bulk rate.
