Woodwinds undoubtedly have some of the most diverse sounds within the family of instruments itself. There are the rich, sharp tones of the clarinet, the whimsical flittering of the flute, and the bright sounds of the saxophone. They’re popular instruments, and for good reason.
If you’re a fan of classical musical, you’re not going to want to miss the Woodwind Day at Ohio University this fall. And if you own and play a woodwind instrument, you’re really not going to want to miss it. This annual event hosts a full day of choirs, master classes, workshops, recitals, and seminars for folks who are interested in the musical instruments. It’s a celebration of all things music and is open to the general public.
What Happens on Woodwind Day?
Woodwind Day is a yearly gathering that honors instruments in the woodwind family (i.e., flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxophones, and more). Anyone is welcome to attend Woodwind Day. That includes, high schoolers, college students, hobbyists, and even professionals who are looking to expand their woodwind know-how.
The day is broken down by instrument, with each instrument having its own special schedule to follow along with throughout the course of the day. Attendees will listen to the OHIO Winds ensemble at a welcoming ceremony in the morning and split off into groups for the rest of the day. The remainder of the day is filled with activities like yoga (yes, yoga does have a place in classical music), repertoire masterclasses, choir rehearsals, and tons more. Groups adjourn for around an hour and a half midday to find lunch at one of the many well-loved restaurants along Court Street.
Beyond being an educational opportunity for a favorite instrument, Woodwind Day is also a great opportunity for high school students to see what musical institutions at a college campus look like. If they’re interested in majoring in something music-related, this is the perfect chance to obtain hands-on experience in a college setting with on-campus instructors.
For everyone else in attendance, Woodwind Day is a celebration of the instruments they love and the community behind them. If you’re interested in attending, the event takes place on November 23rd, 2024, and it spans all day long until around 5:30pm. Registration is free, but the university asks that attendees do register beforehand.
Keep your eyes peeled to the Woodwind Day landing page on Ohio University’s website leading up to the event, as registration details and schedules have yet to be finalized.
