Like opera? You don’t have to go far from your Ohio University housing to enjoy the best.
The Metropolitan Opera is live in high density at the Athena Cinema. This award-winning series of opera performances is transmitted live from the Met stage into movie theaters around the world. It’s pretty cool to experience live opera in your local cinema, and even better, it’s free for Ohio students (tickets limited, first come, first served). Pick up the remainder of the season starting in February and then continuing through May:
- Porgy and Bess by Gershwin: starts Feb. 1
- Handel’s Agrippina: starts Feb. 29
- Wagner’s Der Fliegende Hollander: March 14
- Puccini’s Tosca: April 11
- Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda: May 9
Contact the Athena Cinema for more information. The Athena is Southeast Ohio’s top art house theater, showing a variety of first-run and classic films, documentaries and locally produced and student work on three screens. Opening its doors in 1915 as the Majestic, it is currently operated by the College of Fine arts at OU.
